Microsoft decries lack of IT spending

Drive-by espionage attacks target Java, Flash flaws

Hackers are using vulnerabilities in Oracle Java and Adobe Flash to carry out drive-by attacks on visitors to foreign policy,defence,and humanitarian websites,according to security volunteer organisation the Shadowserver Foundation. Drive-by exploits,in which a user visits a website and then is sent to further sites to upload malware,are being used to target users with defence,foreign policy,and humanitarian interests,the Foundation said.

Over the past two weeks,exploits that have been “heavily used” by attackers target a flaw in Oracle Java Runtime Environment(CVE-2012-0507),and an object confusion vulnerability in Adobe Flash,(CVE-2012-0779),Shadowserver security experts Steven Adair and Ned Moran said in a blog post on Tuesday.The Adobe flaw was patched in May,and the Oracle hole in February.

“Right now,as you read this, there are a few recent exploits that are being heavily used by attackers engaged in cyber-espionage to take a foothold onto various networks,”Adair and Moran said.Amnesty International Hong Kong’s Chinese-language site is serving Flash exploit code.The attack does not appear to be linked to an attack on the Amnesty International UK site last week,but may be linked to an attack on the UK site last year,according to the researchers.

Would an American Who Shot Down a Surveillance Drone Be Considered a “Hero” by Some?

The website MediaMatters reports that two Fox News contributors have suggested that Americans unhappy with domestic surveillance drones may take action into their own hands—and perhaps become heroes.

On Monday, the FAA released new rules governing the use of surveillance drones (or unmanned aerial vehicles) by domestic public safety agencies, such as law enforcement and fire departments. Interested agencies can apply for expedited approval of drones weighing up to 25 pounds. The drones may not fly higher than 400 feet and must be in sight of an operator at all times. They also cannot fly near airports.

Napolitano didn’t say that he would personally consider shooting down a drone an act of heroism. But he failed to invoke the same “just making a prediction” language that Krauthammer did, leading MediaMatters’ Erik Schroeck to suggest that Napolitano might be “encouraging” such action. “[W]hile there are serious concerns over the use of drones domestically, Napolitano’s suggestion that an ‘American patriot’ should fire at one being used by law enforcement could lead to serious and potentially dangerous consequences,” Schroeck writes.

Schroeck’s interpretation may be a bit of a stretch. But this conversation highlights the very real battle brewing between drone advocates and civil liberties activists on both the left and the right. (Krauthammer said on Special Report, “‘I’m going to go hard left on you here, I’m going ACLU.) But as more drones take to U.S. airspace, the rhetoric here is likely to go beyond Napolitano’s.

ActionScript gets an OAuth 2.0 library from Adobe

Adobe has released an OAuth 2.0 library in ActionScript under an Apache 2.0 Licence. The software was developed as part of the work the company did to create its Adobe Creative Cloud platform. The ActionScript library is said to conform to version 2.15 of the OAuth 2.0 specification and is compatible with services such as Facebook, Google and Twitter, among others.

The library’s function and use is described in a blog post by Charles Bihis, a member of the Adobe Infrastructure Services team. He describes the operation of the library in a typical OAuth 2.0 workflow and presents a simple demonstration of the library in action. The ActionScript OAuth 2.0 Library has been published on his own GitHub repository where he invites developers to fork and extend the product.
